The passing of time … and an owl!

Hello everyone in blogland. Hope you are all well and dandy on this sunny day. My little boy (otherwise known as No 1 Son) turned 15 yesterday. I remember the time when he was this size so clearly.

It put me in a contemplative mood. Where does the time go – how do we not notice it fleeting by? The answer, I believe, is routine and the general ‘busy-ness’ of life. It is so easy to get caught up in the general day to day activities. I started a jar this year – a jar of happy things and even that (although there have been many happy things to celebrate this year) has got lost in day-to-day living. I wonder how much of the time I spent cycling, scootering, building, making, painting, railway track constructing, lego building or den and tent adventures he will remember in later life? A lot of it I hope. Now his time is spent with his friends, gaming and having fun. I make the most of our evening meals when we are all sat around one table with no distractions and I can catch up on what is happening in his life. I would worry if it was not this way round. I am fortunate that he will still be seen out with me!

We celebrated yesterday like this! A cafe, a good book (for him!), a play area for Little Miss H and cake!! It was a pleasure to spend time with him – even if he was nose deep in the latest sy-fy book. Now I focus on building strong foundations with Little Miss H so that I can have a similar relationship with her when she is older. Some of the activities remain the same – cycling, painting and making all still feature heavily in day to day life as does exploring the great outdoors and doing a considerable amount of this:

She has always loved the swings – no matter where they are. Parks, woods and sometimes with spectacular views! How do we slow the time? We don’t but by doing lots of this we guarantee our children will remember the times when life slowed, time was spent purely on them and doing the things that they loved to do and at those times washing, work, tidying, shopping did not get in the way. Building into our everyday lives opportunities to celebrate the passing of time with our children – whether it be the seasons, the solstices or just birthdays and Christmas – is the way to slow the pace of life and truly live. Or that’s my take at least! As with anything in my life – if it resonates with you I’m glad, if not please disregard it as not something for you.

After my very contemplative post I’ll leave you with a wise owl! They are making a come-back in my little crafting room and always make me smile.

Until next time I’ll be building memories.

  1. I still remember when my little boy was that age and he will be 40 next year. And he’s beginning to think he has to look after me sometimes which is sweet!

  2. I know what you mean! Goes by in the blink of an eye! X

  3. Making memories is what life’s all about for me – my boys are now young adults and I thought they would stop wanting to do stuff with me, I was so pleased yesterday when my 15 yr old emailed me at work to ask if we could spend my next day off out walking across the countryside – these are the times that matter and that they will look back on. Blessings to you Betty
